Self-Care For The Holidays

Feeling stressed out this Holiday season? STOP. Breathe... and give yourself some L-O-V-E with these easy and delicious self-care tips. 

We all know the holidays can be a stressful time. However, "the most wonderful time of the year" should be filled with peace, joy and indulgence. That's why it's important to take care of yourself during this season to relieve stress and anxiety. 

SELF-CARE TIP #1: Self-Massage 

Grab some peppermint oil and give yourself a delicious self-massage! Roll out all of those knots in your shoulders and neck and soothe your mind with some gentle temple massage. 

SELF-CARE TIP #2: Gratitude

Write down 10 things you are grateful for. No matter what stress you encounter, or challenges you face, the holidays are a time for gratitude. By focusing on all that you have to be grateful for, you will automatically be put in a state of peace and joy. You can't be stressed and grateful at the same time! This quick practice will only take you two minutes but will have incredible results. 

SELF-CARE TIP #3: DIY beauty 

Take five minutes to make an easy, all-natural beauty product that you can use to exfoliate dry, cracked lips that often haunt us during colder weather. It will also get your lips ready for all that mistletoe ;)

DIY cranberry sugar lip scrub

In a mason jar or small bowl, mix together the following ingredients: 

  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 2 cup sugar
  • splash of unsweetened 100% cranberry juice 

Rub together a small amount on your lips and wipe away with a tissue. You can also lick it away! It tastes great. This lip scrub can also be used on your body as an exfoliator to tighten and brighten your skin that often suffers during the winter. 

Remember to take good care of yourself during the holidays so that you can share your best self with others. Peace, love and joy to you and yours! 

Spicy coconut noodles and ginger citrus salad

Spicy Coconut Noodes

  • 8 ounces rice noodles 
  • 1 can unsweetened coconut milk 
  • 3 tbsp. tomato paste 
  • 1 tsp. chili powder -- I like a little extra spice :) 
  • 1 tsp. sea salt 
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced 
  • 1/4 eggplant chopped and sautéed in coconut oil
  • 16 fresh basil leaves chopped 
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut 
  1. Cook noodles according to package. Drain and set aside. 
  2. In a large saucepan, over medium heat, combine coconut milk, tomato paste, chili powder and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 3 minutes 
  3. Stir in noodles and eggplant and toss. 
  4. Top with scallions and coconut 

Ginger Citrus Salad

  • 1 box of organic spring mix lettuce 
  • 2 mandarin oranges (split)
  • 1/4 cup chewy candied ginger (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cranberries 
  • 1/4 cup candied pecans 
  • Dressing: juice of 1/4 lemon, 2 tbsp. olive oil, Herbamare seasoning (I use this on everything) 

Almond butter banana cookies (gluten-free/vegan)

Moist, soft, delicious and super quick and easy. I like to make some with the glaze for a tasty dessert and some without for breakfast or a snack.

  • 2 medium mashed ripe bananas
  • 3 tbsp.  chia seeds 
  • 3/4 cup almond butter
  • 1 vegan "egg" = 2 tbsp.. gluten-free flour + 1/2 tsp. baking powder + 2 tbsp. almond milk (wisk)
  • 1 cup organic steal cut oats 
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon 
  • 1 tsp. vanilla 
  • 3 tbsp. maple syrup 
  • Glaze = 4 tbsp. organic powdered sugar, 2 tbsp. maple syrup 
  1.  Combine all ingredients in large bowl and stir until well combined.
  2. Use ice cream scoop to scoop onto a greased baking sheet (I always grease with coconut oil)
  3. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes
  4. Let fully cool and use spatula to remove 
  5. Drizzle with glaze 
  6. Store in fridge 

Sky Snacks: Spicy green apples

This is one of my favorite snacks that I discovered recently while at a yoga training in Mexico. The yoga school had fresh fruit out all day for snacks, including a spice table and one woman always put lime juice, sea salt and cayenne pepper on her apples. I LOVE spicy so I became obsessed with this snack. 

Slice up one crunchy green apple, juice with fresh lime, sprinkle with Himalayan pink salt and cayenne pepper. You can also try hot sauce instead of cayenne. 

Blueberry banana spiced oatmeal

  • 1/2 cup of organic steal cut oats 1 cup of almond milk
  • 1 cup almond milk 
  • 1 tsp. raw honey 
  • 1 sliced banana 
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries 
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon 
  • ground ginger to taste 
  • sea salt to taste 

Combine oats and almond milk in a medium saucepan and stir on medium heat. Reduce to a simmer and stir occasionally. Mix in 1/2 cup of blueberries in and stir and mash into the oats. When the oats are soft and mushy, remove from saucepan into bowl.

Mix in all other ingredients and add extra of anything you want. I always use extra cinnamon and ginger.

Ever since I was eight years old, I have been fascinated by the concept of "being healthy." It first started when my mom got really into the Alkarian diet back in 2001 (which is what Tom Brady now lives by!) She brought home this drink called "Supergreens" and I was intrigued. My mom always told me that we have the ability to heal our bodies from the inside out and I have never stopped believing that. We are so much more powerful than we give ourselves credit for. 

Sky Life is about exploring that power through feeding and connecting our mind, body, and spirit. It's about offering you the information and the tools to tap into your power, allowing you the freedom to be your true self. Your authentic self. 

I am a senior at Elon University in North Carolina and I have struggled for a long time with placing unnecessary pressure on myself to fit a certain mold of the person who I thought I should be. The person that culture and society told me I should be. I recently realized that who I am is perfect. And who you are is perfect. We are perfectly imperfect and that is beautiful! I hope that Sky Life empowers you to practice loving yourself and being yourself. 

I was also frustrated by a lot of the health content that I constantly see circulating on the Web and in health magazine. "10 foods to blast fat and boost your metabolism!" "5 minute ab workout for a flat stomach!" While taking care of your body is a incredibly important, we must remember that we are more than just our bodies! Your body is a vehicle and an access point for an amazing life, but flat abs and a perfect butt is not the answer. We are something much deeper and while your body must be strong and healthy to serve your highest power, it's not what we must to focus on to thrive

What about feeding your soul? What about training your mind to serve you? Do you know how incredibly beautiful and powerful you are? Powerful in the best way. I hope Sky Life helps you see that.
